News!

May 29th 2024

Thank you to Vote 16 Canada for this opportunity to attend the Vote 16 summit! I was already convinced that extending voter rights to younger people was the right thing to do, but this summit just proved to me that there is absolutely zero reason for limiting voting rights to people 18 and over. This is a human rights issue, as limiting voting right for no good reason is anti-democratic. The evidence is overwhelming, the world needs to be ready for vote 16.

Proud to be taking this issue to the courts!

December 2021:

Very exciting news!!

I, along with other youth across the country, are bringing a constitutional challenge against the the age restriction in the Elections Act. The Canadian Charter of Rights gives all citizens the right to vote and also says that citizens must be treated equally, including the right to not be discriminated against on the basis of age. We’re arguing that this makes the Elections Act’s age restrictions unconstitutional.

Young people are currently disenfranchised by our political system, and we see that our issues are not represented or addressed. This has lead to a lack of action on many important issues including climate change.

March 2021:

My friend and fellow climate activist Rae just co-wrote little book on women’s rights and it’s SUPER COOL! I’m super proud of them and am so honoured that I was picked as a local activist to highlight. Anyway, you should totally give Rae a follow on instagram (rae_steeves_) to see all their amazing activism.
