Letter Thirty-Five: Nature

Dear Mr. Prime Minister and all those it may concern,

Have you ever had that moment when you’re out in nature and you get that feeling of calm? Staring up into a huge tree, seeing an eagle take off, sitting by a lake at sunset. The natural world give us so much beauty. It gives us such moments a wonder and aww. But it also provides the foundation to our economies, societies and everyday life. We need nature for food, water and other essentials. We NEED nature. No matter how much our society grows and changes, no matter how developed our technologies are, we will always need nature.

So let me ask you this. If nature is so beautiful, so essential, then why aren’t humans doing everything possible to keep it healthy? Why do we fill our oceans with plastic and our air with fumes? Why do we let the artic melt and the amazon burn? We are letting the foundations of our lives crumble. Not only that- we’re ACTIVELY CAUSING that crumble. Any person who takes a pickaxes to the foundation of their house every day is a fool. Especially if there is no other house to go to. Just because the house hasn’t fallen and someone might invent something to keep the house standing doesn’t mean you should continue to break the foundation. Even if you live on the top floor and your walls are still intact, doesn’t mean there aren’t people in the basement and their walls shake every time you hit them with your pickaxe. And to those of you who say that it would take a lot of pickaxing to take down a house, know that we as a species have been hitting our house for hundreds of years. Our house is ready to fall.

We need to stop letting people destroy the natural world. We need to protect it. Because WE are part of it. Humans are as much part of nature as the grass and the trees. When we kill nature, we’re killing ourselves. When we pollute the earth we are killing ourselves. What kind of a dumb species are we to continue to do something so out of our self-interest.

We must take large and decisive action against the climate and other environmental crises. It is the only way we can continue to live on this earth safely. There is no time left. We wasted it arguing amongst ourselves.

Protect nature. Protect the planet. Protect the future. Protect humans.

I hope you have a wonderful day!
