Letter Forty-Four: Solar Energy

Dear Mr. Prime Minister and all those it may concern,

Often when I walk down the road I see spaces that are ideally suited for solar panels. Whether it’s a roof tilted at a perfect angle, or a big empty lot getting direct sun, I always sigh and morn the fact that there are no solar panels in sight. My mum recently looked into getting solar panels for our house. She said that the government subsidy programs where not very helpful and too complicated to understand. Eventually she gave up. My aunt has a really great roof for solar panels, and a huge sunlight back yard where one or two wouldn’t even take up space. But the idea of figuring out solar panels just felt like a lot of work, time and money.

A little while ago I heard about a study that said that covering the Sahara desert in solar panels and wind turbines would power the world several times over. The study also explained why that’s not possible because it would destroy the local ecosystems and lead to many problems for the people who live in that area. But my point is that there is so much more we could be doing with our green energy sources. Financial help for people is not great where I live and even in places with great programs, people have assumption the process will be hard and expensive.

A good, comprehensive, national plan to help people get solar along with a good advertising campaign would really help Canada become greener. People want to help. They see youth protesting and read the news reports and they want to help. But if it’s time-consuming, expensive and frustrating to do, people will lose interest. We are wasting peoples drive for change. We are wasting time. We are wasting our perfect roof space!

I hope you have a wonderful day!
