Dear Mr. Prime Minister and all those it may concern,
My name is Amelia Penney-Crocker, I’ve written seven letters to you so far and I will continue to write many others. If you have read my other letters, you’ll know what this is about.
The Global Risk Report 2020 was published in January and it listed the top five biggest global risks in 2020. Here’s what they were:
- Extreme Weather events
- Failure of Climate Change migration and adaptation
- Climate Change and biodiversity loss
- Major natural disasters
- Human-made environmental damage and disasters
For the first time in history all the thing on that list are environmental and, if you count the natural disasters and extreme weather as caused by climate change, all of them are caused by humans and wouldn’t be on that list without our intervention.
Climate change is going to be a massive bump in human history; it may even be a mountain we won’t be able to climb. But there is still time to shrink that mountain and lower the suffering that this crisis will bring. We need the earth to be healthy so that we humans are healthy. It is irresponsible to continue to hurt the earth because it will only come back and hurt all of us. From a purely selfish survival perspective, we need climate action. From a moral and ethical stand point, we need climate action. The economy needs climate action. The earth needs climate action. We all need climate action.
I hope you are having a wonderful day!
Amelia Penney-Crocker
